Wyndham was humming yesterday as thousands of spectators lined the streets for the final day of the Burt Munro Challenge.
Among the riders flocking to the small Southland town was Balfour's Karen Carr, who rode in on her Triumph 900 America, with red biker Elmo attached.
"He comes everywhere with me," she said.
A Challenge veteran, Ms Carr said she liked being treated like "one of the boys".
"You hear everything, they watch out for you," she said. "It's good fun, I'll ride till the day I die," she said.
Bike enthusiast and spectator Paul Hinton, of Alexandra, was another enjoying the action.
"I've had everything from a 50cc to a 1400cc Kawasaki ... [at the moment] I've got eight bikes and two quads in the garage," he said.
Several crashes, a broken back and smashed shoulder had not hindered his passion.
"If you're going to have an accident, it may as well be on a motorbike," he joked.
Meanwhile, riders enjoyed their downtime in the pit under large shaded trees.
City Salvage Demolition racing manager Paddy Snowdon, of Christchurch, and Indian rider Chris Frisken, of Melbourne, may have been plagued by a protest regarding the front brakes of their 1941 750 Sport Scout, but it did not stop them from planning a win.
"I came all the way from Melbourne to ride this bike in this event ... It's all about performing," Mr Frisken said.
Organising committee member Pam Yorke said most of the 500 Wyndham locals were involved in yesterday's event, whether it was watching or helping out.
The event gave Wyndham a boost and something the town could be identified with, she said.
"It brings people to Wyndham. People look forward to it. We have something to call our own," she said.
