ARARAT - Well-known Bendigo International Madison winner Glenn O'Shea took out the premier event at Saturday's Ararat Classic Track Carnival.
His impressive last-lap sprint afforded him a narrow victory over South Australian young gun Alex Edmondson in the gruelling elite men and men under 19 Aces 50-lap scratch race.
Ararat Victorian Institute of Sport rider Tom Hamilton placed third in his first Aces' race after pacing O'Shea throughout.
Edmondson got the better of his rival in the final of the Ararat Business Houses' wheelrace, defeating Rockhampton's Jay Callaghan and O'Shea in an exciting finish.
With more than 50 events run between midday and 8.30pm, the 38th annual carnival was an exciting evening of non-stop competitive racing.
The elite women and women 19 wheelrace final was as thrilling as the premier men's event as it went down to the wire.
Newly crowned Australian women's omnium champion Annette Edmondson triumphed in the end, stealing victory from 2010 Victorian Junior Cyclist of the Year Imogen Jelbart.
Shannon McCurley claimed third place, while Toni Abissogoni rode into fourth.
Ararat cycling star Jaron Gardiner, fresh from a stellar performance at the Australian Senior Track Championships in Sydney, excelled in his pet event, the keirin.
Gardiner's sprint in the KHS-sponsored elite men and men 19 final thrilled the crowd as he stormed home to defeat O'Shea and Bendigo's Jamie Crass.
Nina Greig Towers was one of the lucky recipients to leave the David Blackie Velodrome with jewellery after winning the junior 17 girls' wheelrace sponsored by Mackay's Jewellers.
Runners up Madeleine Cardillo and Ruby Greig Hurtig also received jewellery.
Ararat's Greg Hogan finished the carnival on a high, stealing the show in the open men C 3000-metre scratch race.
He also rode to victory in the division's moto pace earlier in the day.
The Ararat cyclists competing in the under 17 and under 15 categories all had a good day riding in open company.
